Rupee Crashes To New Record Low, 81 Per Dollar In Sight

Rupee Today: The domestic currency crashed to a record low of 80.86 per dollar

The rupee crashed to a new record low against a rampant greenback on Thursday, with 81 per dollar now just a hop, skip and jump away, driven by a deep rout in global risk assets after the Federal Reserve warned aggressive policy path even at the cost of a recession to fight elevated inflation.

The currency registered its biggest single-day fall in six months on Thursday. It was the biggest single-day fall for the local unit since February 24.

Bloomberg quoted the domestic currency last changing hands at 80.8688 per dollar, down nearly 90 paise from the previous close of 79.9788.

Reuters reported that the Indian currency dropped to a record of 80.86 to the dollar, down from 79.9750 in the previous session.

PTI said the rupee tanked 99 paise to close provisionally at a new all-time low of 80.95 against the US dollar.

Forex traders said the US Fed's rate hike and escalation of geopolitical risk in Ukraine sapped risk appetite, according to a PTI report, which also added that the strength of the American currency in the overseas market, a muted trend in domestic equities, risk-off mood and firm crude oil prices weighed on the rupee.

We believe the current downtrend in the rupee may continue for a while even after strong domestic fundamentals. The local currency will react to a stronger greenback but there could be outperformance among the regional currencies," Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, told PTI.

He added that spot USD-INR now has resistance in the area of 81.25 to 81.40 while the previous top 80.12 would act as support.

The dollar pulled back from two-decade highs, but rising US bond yields and hawkish remarks on future rate hikes from the Fed pressured risk assets.

"While the Fed has maintained a hawkish stance, the steady pace of rate hikes and the slight improvement in the inflation situation shows that there is reduced pressure on the central bank to act aggressively," said Ravindra Rao, Head Commodity Research at Kotak Securities.

"We may see some correction in the US dollar once the central bank acknowledges improvement in inflation situation. Another challenge for the US dollar could be aggressive tightening by other central banks to control inflation as well as possible central bank interventions to support their currencies," he added.

Russia's intensified conflict with Ukraine and tensions between Beijing and Taiwan further hurt sentiment, boosting safe-haven flows and a rout in global financial markets.

Investors before today were not willing to test the Reserve Bank of India's resolve to defend the rupee from falling far below 80 per dollar, but the breach of that level suggests more pain for policymakers now.

While the rupee's fall this year has been dramatic and significant, the RBI has drawn down the country's forex reserves to defend against the kind of crash the rupee experienced on Thursday.

The Indian central bank has spent over $80 billion from the forex reserves since Russia invaded Ukraine late in February, with the domestic currency more or less standing its ground compared to its emerging market peers and some developed market currencies.

The pace of the forex reserves' erosion this year has been faster than during the Fed's taper tantrum in 2013.

Traders that Reuters spoke to, were unable to confirm whether the Reserve Bank of India intervened in the spot market during the session. Some traders told Reuters that the RBI may have stepped in to arrest the rupee's decline, but the intervention was not too aggressive.

"Given the current pro-dollar and weak equity sentiment, we expect RBI to... focus on smoothening the move towards 81 over the next few sessions," Gautam Kumar, Head of Financial Products at Kristal.AI, a Singapore-based digital private wealth management platform, told Reuters.

"We think USD/INR will just shift to trade in a higher 80-82 range over the medium term," he added.

On the other hand, Japan's first intervention since 1998 stabilised the yen's 20 per cent decline versus the dollar this year, with the currency gaining some ground.

But the Bank of Japan, in contrast to the Fed, firmly adhered to its ultra-low interest rate policy on Thursday, driving the yen lower against the US dollar.

US yields appear to be appealing and investors believe other economies to be too fragile to support rates as high as those being considered in the US are helping to push the dollar higher.

Back in Europe, Norway hiked its interest rates by 50 basis points, and the Bank of England was the next to move, with traders anticipating a 75 basis point increase there as well.

But that wasn't expected to do anything to help the regional currencies.

Indeed, the Swedish crown remained at a record low after the nation's highest rate hike in a generation this week, while the pound had touched a 37-year low of $1.1213 overnight.

The Australian dollar, down 0.4 per cent on Thursday to $0.6622, and the New Zealand dollar, down 0.4 per cent to $0.5882, were both close to their lowest levels since the middle of 2020.

The dollar's surge also sent emerging market currencies tumbling on Thursday.

Rupee hits record low against US dollar, tipped to fall further, say analysts - Hindustan Times

The Indian rupee is likely to fall further after hitting a record low to the dollar on Thursday as the U.S. Federal Reserve hinted at more aggressive rate hikes to tame inflation.

The rupee opened at a record low of 80.2850 per U.S. dollar, down from 79.9750 in the previous session.

The Fed raised rates by 75 basis points, in line with expectations. More importantly, it hinted that more hikes were coming and that rates would stay elevated until 2024. Asian currencies opened weaker, with the Chinese yuan slipping below 7.10 to the dollar.

"After the hawkish Fed Reserve commentary, the rupee is (set to fall)", said Anil Bhansali, head of treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors.

"The intervention from the central bank will remain crucial and they are expected to be present through the day. However, they may allow a closing for the pair above 80 today."

Samir Lodha, managing director at QuantArt Market Solutions, reckoned that more losses were in store for the rupee if the RBI decides to step back.

"Once RBI allows INR to trade beyond 80 on a consistent basis, I expect rupee to head towards 82.0 in a couple of months on account of the trade deficit and due to global recession and money supply tightening," Lodha said. It is possible that "rupee will depreciate further with RBI intervention to control it whenever required," said Venkatakrishnan Srinivasan, founder and managing partner at Rockfor Fincap.

However, any possible intervention by RBI may be less aggressive this time, said Arnob Biswas, head FX at SMC Global Securities.

"RBI may not be aggressive considering the hawkish side of Fed. On top of that substantial drop in net liquidity in the system may warrant to do so," Biswas said.

Dilip Parmar, research analyst at HDFC Securities, said that "even if the RBI steps in, it will be a temporary support and it cannot change the direction."

Meanwhile, Kunal Sodhani, vice president, global trading center at Sinhan Bank, said "a lot of option sellers may trigger stop losses"

"Needless to say though, it remains quite important to see how RBI action continues from here," Sodhani said.

MARKET REACTION

Second Update at 3:20 pm ET

The Fed’s chair retained a forceful tone during his press conference, indicating that the FOMC seeks to return to a “sufficiently restrictive” stance to restore price stability, but pointed out that the committee is split between 100 and 125 basis points of additional tightening for the rest of this year.

He also repeated that the historical record cautions against prematurely loosening policy, but that warning was offset by comments indicating that at some time “it may become appropriate” to slow the pace of interest rate increases, an observation that appeared to have eased some of Wall Street’s worst fears.

Despite the hawkish message, risk assets managed to mount a recovery, with the S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 and Bitcoin all moving higher in late trading. Gold prices also rallied, jumping as much as 1.2% after the press event. Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar trimmed some gains as U.S. Treasury yields started to retrace their initial advance.

Looking ahead, once markets reassess today’s events and realize the monetary policy environment will become increasingly hostile to the economy and speculative appetite, risk assets may resume their decline. That said, it wouldn’t be surprising if markets reverted lower in the coming days, as traders reload their short positions.

Updated at 2:25 pm ET

Prior to the central bank's announcement, Fed funds futures were signaling a terminal rate of around 4.5% during the second quarter of next year, but market expectations quickly adjusted higher to match the Fed's more aggressive estimates reflected in the updated dot plot, which pointed to 4.6% as a final destination for borrowing costs in 2023 while simultaneously ruling out premature cuts.

The reassessment of the monetary policy outlook pushed U.S. Treasury yields higher across the curve, with the 2-year note rising above the 4.07% threshold for the first time since 2007. Bond moves bolstered the U.S. dollar, driving the DXY index to its best levels in more than two decades. On the other hand, interest rate-sensitive precious metals reacted negatively, driving gold to trim most session's gains.

Meanwhile, risk assets took a sharp turn to the downside, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 falling more than 0.5%. Bitcoin also slumped to trade flat, erasing a 3% advance, as traders rushed to trim speculative positions that could suffer in less accommodative environments.

Original Post 2:10 pm ET

After two days of intense deliberations, the Federal Reserve concluded its September meeting this afternoon. The FOMC took another aggressive step in the fight to restore price stability and opted to raise its benchmark rate by three-quarters of a percentage point to 3.00-3.25%, in line with consensus expectations. This decision, which takes the federal funds rate well past the “neutral level” and into restrictive territory was reached by unanimous vote.

The U.S. central bank has been removing accommodation at the fastest pace since the early 1980s, delivering a total of 300 basis points of tightening since the start of the cycle in March, with a clear and unwavering goal in mind: to rein in rampant inflation. The Fed wants to achieve this part of its mandate by slowing the economy via tighter financial conditions in the form of higher mortgage, credit card and loan rates as well as lower stock prices. Together, these variables tend to negatively affect spending, business investment and hiring plans, leading to weaker aggregate demand. Over time, this combination of factors helps moderate inflationary pressures, although the lag is often unpredictable.

While annual CPI eased to 8.3% in August from 8.5% in July, it remained more than 4 times above the Fed’s 2% long-term target. What’s more, the core gauge advanced more than anticipated, clocking in at 6.3% from 5.9% previously amid accelerating rental costs, a sign that the price outlook remains extremely uncertain and biased to the upside.

The Fed’s front-loaded hiking regime has been responsible for the sharp rally in the U.S. dollar this year that pushed the DXY index to multi-decade highs earlier this month. The normalization process has also catalyzed a major sell-off in risk assets, from equities to cryptocurrencies, as investors have rushed to trim speculative positions amid shrinking liquidity. With the era of easy money ending, volatility is likely to remain elevated, keeping market sentiment on edge and preventing risky assets from making a lasting recovery. This means that the S&P 500 and Bitcoin are not out of the woods yet.

FOMC POLICY STATEMENT

The statement offered a downbeat message on economic activity, noting that spending and production indicators are showing modest growth.

On the labor market, the document stressed that the unemployment remains low, acknowledging that job gains remain strong, providing a vote of confidence in the outlook.

The central bank reiterated that inflation is high, reflecting supply and demand imbalances related to the coronavirus health crisis, rising food and energy costs, and broader price pressures. In addition, the bank said it continues to be attentive to inflation risks.

On monetary policy, the FOMC maintained the same forward guidance as previous statements, indicating that ongoing increases in the target range will be appropriate, signaling policymakers are not yet done with aggressive hikes.

SUMMARY OF ECONOMIC PROJECTIONS

There were meaningful changes in the September Summary of Economic Projections (SEP) compared to the material presented in June. In addition, the forecast horizon was extended to include estimates for 2025. The main details are highlighted below.

Source: Federal Reserve

FED DOT PLOT

The Fed’s so-called dot plot, which shows the trajectory for interest rates, signaled a more hawkish hiking path than contemplated a few months ago.

According to the updated diagram, officials expect to raise borrowing costs to 4.4% by December, implying about 120 basis points of additional tightening through year’s end. This reflects an upward revision of 100 bp from the material submitted in June. Participants then see the federal funds rate rising to 4.6% in 2023, 80 basis points higher than in the previous forecast. For 2024, the benchmark rate is expected to stand at 3.9%, compared to 3.4% before.

GPD AND UNEMPLOYEMENT

In June, the median projection for gross domestic product was 1.7% for this and next year, and 1.9% for 2024. The central bank downgraded these forecasts and now expects GDP to expand by 0.2%, 1.2% and 1.7%, respectively, over those three years, suggesting that the Fed is hell-bent on engineering a sustained period of below-trend growth to squash inflation.

Turning to unemployment, the new revisions were smaller, but still disappointing. At present, the labor market remains extremely tight, with demand for workers far outstripping labor supply, but this imbalance will begin to correct itself in the medium-term once the Fed's front-loaded actions fully play out in the real economy. In line with that logic, policymakers raised the jobless rate estimate for this year by one-tenth, to 3.8%. For 2023, the unemployment rate was marked up to 4.4% from 3.9% before.

INFLATION

The median projection for core PCE, the central bank’s favorite inflation gauge, was boosted for 2022 and 2023 to 4.5% and 3.1% respectively. In the June’s Summary of Economic Projections, the outlook for this metric stood at 4.3%, 2.7% for these two periods.

Wipro Fired 300 Found Moonlighting For Rivals: Chairman Rishad Premji - NDTV Profit

Wipro Fired 300 Found Moonlighting For Rivals: Chairman Rishad Premji

Wipro discovered 300 people in the last few months were working directly for competitors.

New Delhi:

Wipro Chairman Rishad Premji on Wednesday said the company had found its 300 employees worked with one of its competitors at the same time, and added that action was taken in such cases by terminating their services.

Mr Premji asserted that he stands by his recent comments on moonlighting being a complete violation of integrity "in its deepest form".

"The reality is that there are people today working for Wipro and working directly for one of our competitors and we have actually discovered 300 people in the last few months who are doing exactly that," Mr Premji said speaking at AIMA's (All India Management Association) National Management Convention.

Asked about the action taken again employees who were found to be working parallely for the company as well as for rivals, Mr Premji, on the sidelines of the event, said that their employment had been terminated for "act of integrity violation".

The definition of moonlighting itself is about having another job secretively. As part of transparency, individuals can have candid and open conversations around playing in a band or "working on a project over the weekend", he explained.

"That is an open conversation that the organisation and the individual can make a concerted choice about, on whether that works for them or doesn't," he said.

Separating such cases from those where employees secretly worked for competitors, the Wipro top boss made it clear "there is no space for someone to work for Wipro and competitor XYZ and they would feel exactly the same way if they were to discover the same situation." "That is what I meant...so I do stand by what I said...I do think it is violation of integrity if you are moonlighting in that shape and form," he said.

The issue of 'moonlighting' (techies taking up side gigs to work more than one job at a time) has emerged as a big talking point after the Wipro chairman flagged the issue. Mr Premji had taken to Twitter recently to highlight the issue saying: "There is a lot of chatter about people moonlighting in the tech industry. This is cheating - plain and simple."

The issue of moonlighting by tech professionals has ignited a fresh debate polarising opinions within the industry. Tech Mahindra CEO CP Gurnani tweeted recently that it is necessary to keep changing with the times and added "I welcome disruption in the ways we work".

Many have, however, taken a strong stance on moonlighting. Earlier this month, Infosys had shot off a missive to its employees, asserting that dual employment or 'moonlighting' is not permitted, and warned that any violation of contract clauses will trigger disciplinary action "which could even lead to termination of employment".

"No two timing - no moonlighting!" India's second largest IT services company said in a strong and firm message to employees last week.

Infosys' internal communication titled "no double lives" made it clear that "dual employment is not permitted as per...Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct".

It also cited the relevant clause in the offer letter to drive home the point.

"Any violation of these clauses will lead to disciplinary action which could even lead to termination of employment," Infosys' mail had said.

Tatas evaluating options to consolidate AirAsia India, Vistara under Air India: Report | Mint - Mint

The Tata Group has started an exercise to evaluate options to consolidate AirAsia India and Vistara under Air India to bring operational synergies among the three airlines under its umbrella, sources said.

Air India, which the group had taken control of in January after winning the bid to acquire the national carrier for ₹18,000 crore in October last year, has set up a team under its Director of Operations, R S Sandhu, sources familiar with the development said.

The team will evaluate synergies in operations between Air India Express and AirAsia India as well as between Air India and Vistara, they said.

"Air India CEO and MD Campbell Wilson has set up this team, which will look into synergy between Air India Express and AirAsia India and also between Air India and Vistara and how to achieve the merger," a source said.

The team has been asked to submit its plan within one year, the source added.

It is understood that the plan is to achieve consolidation of AirAsia India into Air India Express over a one year period, while also targeting to bring all of the group's airlines businesses under the Air India umbrella by 2024.

An e-mailed query to Tata Sons seeking comments remained unanswered.

Tata Group took back control of Air India and its low-cost international arm, Air India Express from the government in January this year.

Besides, it holds a majority 83.67 per cent stake in domestic budget carrier AirAsia India, which started flying in June 2014, while the remaining 16.33 per cent is with the Malaysian airliners group AirAsia.

The group is looking to acquire the remaining stake in AirAsia India from AirAsia Group.

In Vistara, Tata Sons' holding stands at 51 per cent and the rest 49 per cent is with Singapore Airlines. The full service carrier had started services from January 2015.
