The German luxury car behemoth Mercedes-Benz Indian subsidiary Mercedes Benz India has made a striking re-entry into the mid-size luxury SUV segment with the launch of its second-generation GLC. The company has launched this opulent new SUV priced at Rs 73.50 lakh (ex-showroom, India) for the 300 4Matic petrol variant and Rs 74.5 lakh for the 220d 4Matic diesel variant. With this new GLC, Mercedes Benz aims to take on the rivals like the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Volvo XC60 among others in India.

In terms of design, the GLC’s design evolution is nothing short of impressive. Sporting a larger grille featuring a prominent three-pointed star logo, the SUV flaunts a distinctive and confident appearance. The redesigned LED headlights are now connected to the grille, creating a seamless visual flow. Notably, the profile maintains its classic appeal, while 19-inch alloy wheels exhibit a fresh design language.

At the rear, the horizontally oriented taillights have been given a sleeker and more modern touch, in line with the brand’s latest design direction. The tailgate showcases a connecting blacked-out bar, while the front and rear bumpers are adorned with chrome-finished elements, designed to resemble skid plates.

In terms of dimensions, the second-generation GLC has been elongated, measuring 60mm longer at 4,716mm, with a 15mm longer wheelbase at 2,888mm. Despite these enhancements, the SUV maintains its practical size, ensuring ample cabin space and a substantial 620 liters of boot space.

Step inside the new GLC, and you’re greeted by a lavish interior reminiscent of the new C-Class. The centerpiece is the impressive 11.9-inch portrait-style touchscreen, complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The dashboard trim, inspired by the Maybach S-Class, features an elegant pinstripe pattern. This sleek interior also houses the integrated infotainment and HVAC controls within the touchscreen.

Comfort and convenience take center stage, with features like an air purifier, 360-degree camera, 64-color ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and heated front seats with memory functions. Safety is well-addressed through a range of features, including seven airbags, pre-safe technology, and an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) featuring blind spot assist, active lane keep assist, attention assist, active brake assist, and active parking assist.

Under the bonnet of this new SUV from the three-pointed star, there is an option between two potent powertrain options. The GLC 300 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine generating 258hp and 400Nm of torque. On the other hand, the GLC 220d comes equipped with a 2.0-liter diesel engine producing 197hp and 440Nm of torque. Both engines are paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and Mercedes’ renowned 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. Additionally, a standard 48V mild-hybrid system, along with an integrated starter generator, offers an extra 23hp and 200Nm of torque.

The GLC enters a competitive arena, locking horns with formidable rivals like the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60, Land Rover Discovery Sport, and Lexus NX. Despite challenges, the GLC’s distinguished features, performance prowess, and iconic Mercedes-Benz luxury make it a strong contender in the luxury SUV segment.
