Maruti Suzuki finished on top of car sales charts in May 2023 ahead of Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra and Kia in India
In the month of May 2023, a total of 3,34,499 units were dispatched in the Indian automotive industry and compared to the same period last year with 2,94,088 units, an impressive YoY sales growth of 13.7 per cent was noted. Maruti Suzuki continued to lead the way with 1,43,708 unit sales as against 1,24,474 units with a YoY growth of 15.5 per cent.
The South Korean auto major, Hyundai, retained its second position with a total of 48,601 units against 42,293 units in May 2022 with a YoY positive volume increase of 14.9 per cent. Tata Motors’ domestic tally stood at 45,880 units against 43,341 units during the same period in 2022 with a YoY volume growth of 5.9 per cent.
Mahindra & Mahindra finished in the fourth position with a domestic total of 32,883 units last month as against 26,650 units in May 2022 with a YoY growth of 23.4 per cent. The top four manufacturers combined to grab a market share of 81 per cent – Maruti Suzuki with 43 per cent, Hyundai with 14.5 per cent, Tata with 13.7 per cent and Mahindra with 9.8 per cent.

Kia India finished in the fifth position with a total of 18,766 units against 18,718 units with a minor YoY growth of 0.3 per cent. Toyota, on the other hand, endured its highest ever monthly sales in India with a total of 19,379 units against 10,216 units with a YoY surge of close to 90 per cent.
This was made possible courtesy of the commencement of third shift to reduce waiting period of Innova Hycross, Fortuner, Innova Hycross and Urban Cruiser Hyryder. In seventh position, Honda could only manage a total of 4,660 units against 8,188 units with a YoY de-growth of 43.1 per cent.
The Japanese brand is gearing up to host the global debut of the Elevate on June 6 and it will be launched in the coming months in India.
