The government is looking at imported coal to build adequate stocks at power plants before monsoon rain hits coal mining and supply decreases. India’s power demand peaks post-monsoon due to high agricultural consumption and warm weather conditions.

The latest data available from the Central Electricity Authority showed thermal power plants had 26.8 million tonnes of coal stock. The plants will blend this with domestic coal. The government has asked all power plants to import 10% of their coal requirement.

CIL will import coal on behalf of power plants to augment coal supplies at power plants. Coal stocks with power plants dwindled quickly over the summer as electricity demand hit a record high amid persistently high temperatures.

After price discovery through bids, CIL will execute a contract with the successful bidder and also enter into a back-to-back agreement with state gencos and independent power producers (IPPs) receiving the imported coal. The coal imported will be routed through nine ports located on the east and west coast of the country. The selected agency will deliver coal at the doorstep of the power plants of state gencos and IPPs.
