NEW DELHI: The goods and services tax (GST) collection for the month of June slipped below Rs 1 lakh crore mark for the first time after eight months, majorly on account of state-wise lockdowns in wake of second Covid wave, data released by finance ministry showed on Tuesday.
Gross GST revenue collection stood at Rs 92,849 crore in June, of which Central GST is Rs 16,424 crore, state GST Rs 20,397, integrated GST Rs 49,079 crore (including Rs 25,762 crore collected on import of goods) and cess is Rs 6,949 crore (including Rs 809 crore collected on import of goods).
"The GST collection for June 2021 is related to the business transactions made during May 2021. During May, most of the states/UTs were under either complete or partial lock down due to Covid," the Centre said in an official release.
The unprecedented second Covid wave forced state governments to impose lockdown-like measures to curb its spread. With cases peaking in May, majority of the states had shut business and industrial activities.
However, the GST revenue is 2 per cent higher over the same period a year ago. In June 2020, the collections stood at Rs 90,917 crore.
GST collection had remained above the Rs 1 lakh crore mark for eight months in a row and was recorded at Rs 1.02 lakh crore in May.
Besides, generation of e-way bill declined by more than 30 per cent from 5.88 crore in April to 3.99 crore in May.
However, with reduction in caseload and easing of lockdowns, the e-way bills generated during June 2021 is 5.5 crore, indicating recovery of trade and business.
