Technical View | Nifty hits over 5-month high, bulls may take index towards 18,700 - Moneycontrol

It was a great start to the June series, as finally, the Nifty50 closed near its much-awaited strong resistance of 18,500 with one percent gains on May 26, after around a couple of weeks' consolidation. The rally across sectors with a significant fall in volatility supported the market sentiment. The index opened higher at 18,368 and gradually as the day progressed, it extended its upward journey up to 18,509 intraday. On the final tally, it surged 178 points to 18,499.3, the highest closing level since December 14 last year. The Nifty50 has formed a bullish candlestick pattern on the daily charts and negated lower highs lower lows formation of the previous two consecutive sessions, with staying well above all key short-term moving averages (9 and 21-day EMA - exponential moving average). Considering the roaring bulls, the next target to watch out for would be 18,700, the high of mid-December, with immediate support of the 18,400 mark, experts said. The index climbed 1.6 percent for the week and formed a long bullish candlestick pattern on the weekly scale, maintaining higher highs formation for the ninth consecutive week. "The Nifty has been sustaining above a critical moving average, indicating a strong position," Rupak De, Senior Technical at LKP Securities said. He feels the trend is expected to remain positive as long as the index sustains above the support level of 18,400. On the higher end, there is a resistance level at 18,700, he said. Options With today's healthy rally, the Option data indicated that the support and resistance levels have shifted higher to 18,400-18,300 and 18,700-19,000 levels respectively, for the June series. We have maximum Call open interest at 19,000 strike, followed by 18,700 strike & 18,500 strike, with meaningful Call writing at 18,700 strike, then 18,800 strike. On the Put side, the maximum open interest was at 18,400 strike, followed by 18,300 strike & 18,200 strike, with writing at 18,400 strike, then 18,300 strike. "Nifty might face some near-term resistance between 18,700 and 18,800 but that would only be a speed-breaker in the scheme of things," Rahul Ghose, Founder & CEO at Hedged said. He further said the open interest of the Puts has already started rising in the June month expiry right from the 18100, 18200 and 18,300 levels, and the final push will come once you see the 18,500 Puts get written. Bank Nifty Bank Nifty closed above the 44,000 mark, rising 337 points to 44,018 after consolidation on May 16, and formed a bullish candlestick pattern on the daily charts by making higher high, higher low formation and getting back above 9 EMA (43,793) and taking support at 21 EMA (43,424) On a weekly scale, it formed a Bullish Pin Bar with a long lower shadow as buying was visible at lower zones, as it gained 0.11 percent. "Now it has to continue to hold above 43,750 levels, to make an up move towards 44,144, then 44,500, whereas on the downside support is expected at 43,600, then 43,500 levels," Chandan Taparia, Senior Vice President | Analyst-Derivatives at Motilal Oswal Financial Services said. Vodafone Idea Q4 Results: Loss Narrows Sharply But Revenue Declines - BQ Prime

Net loss at Vodafone Idea Ltd. narrowed sharply in the January-March quarter, even as revenue growth declined but met analyst estimates.

Revenue of India’s third largest telecom operator fell 1.19% over the previous three months to Rs 10,532 crore in the quarter ended March 31, 2023, according to an exchange filing on Thursday. That compares with the Rs 10,590-crore consensus estimate of analysts tracked by Bloomberg.

Vodafone Idea Q4 Results: Key Highlights (QoQ)

  • Revenue down 1.19% at Rs 10,532 crore (Estimate: 10,590 crore)

  • Net loss at Rs 6,419 crore vs Rs 7,990 crore (Estimate: Rs 7,516 crore)

  • EBITDA up 0.70% to Rs 4,210 crore (Estimate: Rs 4,213 crore)

  • EBITDA margin at 39.97% vs 39.4% (Estimate: 39.6%)

The company's average revenue per user, or ARPU, in the March quarter stood at Rs 135—the same as in October-December. It improved 9.3% year-on-year.

The annual revenue improved for the first time since the Vodafone-Idea Cellular merger in 2017, supported by tariff hikes, improving subscriber mix and 4G additions. In 2022-23, net loss widened to Rs 29,301 crore from Rs 28,245 crore in FY22, on the back of revenue that rose 9.50% to Rs 42,177 crore. The operational profitability improved by 24.1% to Rs 8,300 crore even as margin stood at 19.7%—the highest since the merger.

Also, total gross debt dipped—from Rs 2,22,890 crore in Q3 FY23 to Rs 2,09,260 crore in Q4 FY23—as the government converted interest on its dues into equity for more than Rs 16,000 crore. Capital expenditure for the full fiscal stood at Rs 3,360 crore.

The company continues to have a negative net worth of Rs 74,360 crore.

Vodafone Idea had 225.9 million subscribers as on March 31, 2023. And while its active user base shrunk by 1.7 million to 207.9 million, the high-paying 4G user base grew by a million to 122.6 million. The blended churn stood at 3.8% in Q4 FY23 as against 4.4% in Q3 FY23.

The January-March period was notable for Vodafone Idea, in the sense that the government, on Feb. 3, agreed to convert into equity the interest accrued of the company’s dues—a move seen as a nudge to the beleaguered telecom operator to come up with a fundraising plan.

While a State Bank of India-led consortium is not in favour of financing Vodafone Idea further, hopes of a fundraising rose after co-promoter Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla rejoined the company’s board as an additional director in April. Those hopes were dashed earlier this month when Vodafone Group Plc valued its investment in Vodafone Idea at nil, effectively indicating that the UK-based telecom operator has no interest in salvaging its joint venture in India.

The company is also yet to launch its 5G operations, at a time when larger rivals Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. and Bharti Airtel Ltd. are surging ahead.

“We continue to remain engaged with our lenders for further debt fundraising as well as with other parties for equity or equity-linked fundraising, to make required investments for the network expansion, including 5G rollout,” Akshaya Moondra, chief executive at Vodafone Idea, was quoted as saying in the exchange filing.

On Thursday, shares of Vodafone Idea Ltd. rose 0.43% to Rs 6.99 apiece on the BSE, even as the benchmark Sensex ended the day 0.16% higher at 61,872.62 points. The quarterly results were declared after market hours.

India's Economic Growth Likely To Exceed 7% In FY23: RBI Governor - NDTV Profit

India's Economic Growth Likely To Exceed 7% In FY23: RBI Governor

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said the growth for 2022-23 is expected to be more than 7%

New Delhi:

Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das today said the growth for 2022-23 is expected to be more than the advance estimate of 7 per cent on the back of economic momentum maintained in the third and fourth quarters of the last fiscal.

As per the second advance estimate released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) in February, the economy is estimated to grow at 7 per cent in 2022-23 against 8.7 per cent in the preceding fiscal.

"There is a possibility that it could be even more...it will not be a surprise if the GDP growth of last year comes slightly above 7 per cent," he said at a CII event in Delhi.

Provisional Annual Estimates for the year 2022-23 will be released on May 31, 2023.

"It initially appeared in the third quarter that there was a pent-up demand which was supporting the economic activity, but all the economic indicators in the fourth quarter of last financial year show that economic activities sustained momentum.

"In fact, all the high-frequency indicators, around 70 of them, which we monitored in the Reserve Bank of India, almost in all of these high-frequency indicators, the momentum was maintained in the fourth quarter. So therefore, we should not be surprised if the growth is slightly more than 7 per cent," he said.

For the current financial year, he said the RBI has projected a growth rate of 6.5 per cent.

About the global scenario, he said the coexistence of high inflation and banking stress is complicating the responses of central banks, as they face or trade-off between the risk of either straining financial markets or having to tolerate a longer period of high inflation.

"Amidst these global uncertainties, the Indian banking system remains stable and resilient with strong capital and liquidity positions, improving asset quality better provisioning coverage and improved profitability," he said.

Mr Das said the decision to tweak policy rates was not in his hand as he himself is driven by the situation on the ground.

In April, the Reserve Bank in a surprise move hit the pause button and decided to keep the key benchmark policy rate at 6.5 per cent.

Prior to it, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was on a rate hiking spree, raising the repo rate by 250 basis points since May 2022.

Speaking at an event organised by the industry chamber CII, Mr Das said there is a suggestion that RBI will take a pause in the coming monetary policy meetings.

"It's not in my hands. It all depends on the situation on the ground. I am driven by what's happening on the ground. What is the outlook on the ground? What are the trends? How is the inflation buildup or the inflation softening? So, it's all there.

"So, it's not a decision which is entirely in my hands, because I am driven by what's happening at the ground level. So, to that extent, you know, I think, I will leave it at that," the governor said.

The last decision to hold rates should be seen as a pause, and not as a pivot, he said.

Citing an example, Mr Das said Canada, after pausing, increased rates to deal with inflation.

On global growth, he said the global economy is mired by geopolitical uncertainty, elevated inflation, volatile financial markets -- including banking sector stress -- food insecurity and debt distress, among others.

On the upside, there has been a slow upturn in global growth, easing of supply chains, moderation of inflation, normalisation of financial markets and reopening of Chinese markets, which have all improved sentiments, but the uncertainty continues, he said.

Amid global churn, the Indian economy has shown resilience and has created requisite buffers to meet geopolitical and domestic challenges.

He assured that the country has sufficient forex reserves and the central bank has maintained the exchange rate of the rupee.

With regard to the internationalisation of the rupee, he said, the RBI has allowed international trade settlement in the rupee in 18 countries. As many as 17 banks have opened 30 special vostro accounts.

Sberbank and VTB Bank -- the largest and second-largest banks of Russia, respectively -- are the first foreign lenders to receive the approval after the RBI announced the guidelines on overseas trade in the rupee in July last year.

Another Russian bank Gazprom, which does not have its unit in India, has also opened this account with Kolkata-based UCO Bank.

A vostro account is a bank account held by a domestic bank for a foreign bank, denominated in the domestic currency of the former. The rupee Vostro Account specifically holds the foreign entity's deposits in Indian rupees at the Indian bank.

Mr Das emphasised the urgent need to ensure availability and access to technology.

He stressed that the future belongs to technology and that industry has a major role to play in technology development, and the public and the private sectors should work together to be technology ready.

With regard to liquidity, he said the central bank would maintain adequate liquidity for meeting the productive requirements of the economy and ensure the stability of the exchange rate.

On FDI he said he expects an uptick in foreign capital flow in May.

He also informed the gathering that the RBI is fine-tuning the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) architecture based on the experience so far.

The RBI on November 1 and December 1, 2022, launched the CBDC for wholesale and retail, respectively.

While the use case of the wholesale CBDC is limited to the settlement of secondary market transactions in government securities, the retail e-rupee is being piloted within a closed user group (CUG) comprising participating customers and merchants.

The first phase includes four banks -- State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank and IDFC First Bank and subsequently, four lenders Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank joined.

The CBDC is expected to make the interbank market more efficient, and settlements in e-rupee can reduce transaction costs by pre-empting the need for settlement guarantee infrastructure or for collateral to mitigate settlement risk.
