Indian crypto exchange WazirX fires 40% of staff: report - Economic Times

Amid the current global economic slowdown, crypto exchange WazirX has reportedly laid off 40 per cent of its total workforce.

A total of 50 to 70 employees of the 150 workers at the exchange were asked to go, CoinDesk reported, citing sources.

The laid-off employees were informed on Friday that they would be paid for 45 days and that they would no longer be needed to report for work.

"The crypto market has been in the grip of a bear market because of the current global economic slowdown," WazirX was quoted as saying in a statement.

"The Indian crypto industry has had its unique problems with respect to taxes, regulations and banking access. This has lead to a dramatic fall in volumes in all Indian crypto exchanges," it added.

One of the sources said "the workforce has been cut from several departments including customer support, HR, and other departments. Managers, Analysts, Associate Managers/Team leaders were among those laid off".

The entire public policy and communication team was fired, according to another employee who lost his job.

As per the report, WazirX daily trading volumes have been steadily declining from a one-year high of 478 million on October 28, 2021, to 1.5 million on October 1, 2022, according to CoinGecko data.

Trading volumes on some days have been lower than a million and "this is not enough to support operations," the sources said.

Tulsi Tanti, the visionary who founded Suzlon and saw the power of renewables before others - Economic Times

India's steady march in the renewable energy sector is a result of the government's push as well as the interest shown by the private sector resulting in massive investments and acquisitions happening in the space.

One of the early pioneers of the power of renewables in India was Tulsi Tanti who founded Suzlon, a name that immediately brings to mind wind turbines and the massive potential in the clean energy sector.

Tanti passed away at the age of 64 due to a cardiac arrest on October 1.

He was the poster boy of India's wind energy boom and his ascent was driven by acquisitions at a rapid clip. The ambition to be the market leader in the wind energy space culminated in Suzlon capturing 50 per cent of the market in India. The hunger for more resulted in his undoing also.

Such was the rise of the man in just a decade that his name was featured in the Forbes List of 40 Richest Indians in 2005.

The company was listed on the bourses on October 19, 2005, at a premium of 35% taking him into the coveted league of billionaires. He had a 70% shareholding in the company at that time and the market valuation was Rs 13,850 crore.

The buzz generated by Suzlon was so intriguing that many a investors jumped on the bandwagon including Bollywood stars like Aishwarya Rai and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.

The debt-binge continued to finance his ambitions to expand rapidly. The company acquired two global giants Hanson and REpower. In 2008, the company hit a valuation of Rs 65,474 crore with Tanti's stake worth Rs 43,547 crore.

However, things started turning for the worse as the global financial crisis took the wind out of the sails of the sector. The complaints of faulty turbines only compounded the problems.

"We are dealing with a very difficult external environment, where the wind industry has gone through a reasonably significant external correction. From a growth rate of about 30% over the past several years, we are now moving to a situation where there will be a flat growth in the industry," said Sumant Sinha, former chief operating officer of Suzlon and current chairman and MD of ReNew Power in June 2009.

Suzlon was rescued by generous bankers and investors from time to time but its debt, which swelled to nearly Rs 18,000 crore, became a big challenge to service as Tanti continued to be ambitious about his company's comeback.

Even an investment from Sun Pharmaceutical's Dilip Shanghvi, who came as a white knight for Suzlon, couldn't really help. Tanti also sold Senvion (earlier REpower) but that was not enough to salvage the rapid fall.

Tanti was optimistic about the power of renewables in changing lives. Even though, his personal stake in Suzlon had dwindled over the years with majority of the company's being pledged, he remained invested in the hopes of revival of the company.

He was awarded the ‘Champion of the Earth’ by the UN and 'Hero of the Environment' by TIME magazine.

On his passing away, Sumant Sinha tweeted, "Very saddened to hear about the passing away of Tulsi Tanti. He was such a visionary and a pioneer of our industry. Many of us owe a lot to him. Truly a loss for all of us. Deepest condolences to the entire @Suzlon family."

Tanti will be remembered as someone who was at the vanguard of the renewable energy boom and whose ambition to put India firmly on the clean energy map of the world will be remembered till eternity.

Why Sensex is up 1,000 points today despite rate hike by RBI | Mint - Mint

Indian stock markets made a sharp recovery after Reserve Bank of India announced its monetary policy decision with Sensex ending up over 1,000 points at 57,426. Analysts said that market is  drawing comfort from expectations that the RBI may be nearing the end of the rate hike cycle in India. The RBI raised its benchmark repo rate by 50 basis points today, the fourth straight increase, as policymakers extended their battle to tame stubbornly high inflation and analysts said further tightening is on the cards. The RBI has now raised rates by a total 190 basis points since its first unscheduled mid-meeting hike in May.

The NSE Nifty 50 index ended up 1.6% at 17,094, snapping a 7-day fall. The Nifty and the Sensex ended up more than 8% this quarter, capping their best quarter in a year. Today, the RBI slightly cut its GDP forecast for the year while maintaining inflation outlook.

“The Indian equity market witnessed a sharp bounceback after a seven-day fall. The fall in the dollar index and no negative surprise by the RBI led to a strong short-covering in the market. Technically, the Nifty was sitting near the 16800-16635 demand zone and derivative data was extremely oversold as FIIs started the October series with 87% short positions in the index future. Therefore, we saw a powerful short-covering rally," said Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart.

European markets were also higher today as the dollar index cooled to one-week lows. "The Nifty witnessed a bullish engulfing candlestick pattern on the daily chart from the support of the 100-DMA, which is a very encouraging sign for the bulls. On the upside, 17190 is an immediate hurdle, and 17325-17425 is the next critical supply zone.

“Bank Nifty also witnessed a sharp bounce back from the psychological support level of 37500. Above this level, we can expect a move towards the 39700 level which may coincide with the 20-DMA. Anecdotally, the first day's low or high of the new series acts as strong support and resistance throughout the series. Therefore, today's low of 17647 has become a sacrosanct reference point for the bulls. In terms of the sector, the leader of the current bull run, banking and financials, outperformed," he added.

Banking stocks have taken the lead in today's advance with Bank Nifty index up 2.6%.

“RBI hiked the policy rate by 50 bps along expected lines and also maintained its stance as “withdrawal of accommodation" citing that the real policy rate (adjusted for inflation) is still trailing pre-pandemic levels. GDP growth estimate for FY23 has been revised down marginally from 7.2% to 7%, while inflation forecasts have broadly been maintained. This indicates that the central bank is somewhat comfortable with macro-economic situation in India relative to other peer emerging economies," said Sampath Reddy, Chief Investment Officer, Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance.

“Therefore, we feel that the RBI may be nearing the end of the rate hike cycle in India and future rate hikes will have more to do with supporting the Indian currency and also to some extent the inflation trajectory. Both equity and bond markets have taken this in a positive stride and have rallied post the policy announcement."

Market heavyweight Reliance Industries also led the gains by moving up 3%.

"The RBI commentary has been a finely balanced one – while global risks are discussed extensively, the RBI appears confident on the growth momentum in the Indian economy in the coming months. The modest downward revision in the FY23 GDP growth target to 7%, from 7.2% earlier, and leaving the inflation forecasts largely unchanged are on expected lines. While today’s RBI communication suggests future policy to remain data dependent and another round of rate hike cannot be ruled out, overall, the MPC refrained from springing any major surprise leading to broadly favourable reaction from most segments of financial markets," said Siddhartha Sanyal, Chief Economist and Head of Research, Bandhan Bank.

Religare Broking in a note said that RBI's confidence in Indian economy highlight of today's monetary policy.

"RBI raising repo rate by another 50 bps was very much in line with market expectations but it’s the confidence of RBI in the economy which has been the highlight of monetary policy. Governor’s confidence that GDP growth rate for FY23 will remain at 7% comes from his statement, “the late recovery in kharif sowing, the comfortable reservoir levels, improvement in capacity utilization, buoyant bank credit expansion and government’s continued thrust on capital expenditure."

“Lastly, Deputy Governor Mr. Michael Patra’s response to a question in the press conference where he stated, “soft-landing is for the developed economies, for India it’s a take-off" sums up everything. We believe RBI and Government are handling the economy far better than their major global counterparts," said Siddarth Bhamre, Head of Research, Religare Broking Ltd.

'We're middle-class. Even I can't afford...': Gadkari’s request to Mercedes-Benz - Hindustan Times

Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday urged German premium car maker Mercedes-Benz to manufacture more cars locally so that more “middle-class” people in India can afford it. Speaking at the rollout of Mercedes-Benz India's first locally assembled EQS 580 4MATIC EV in Pune's Chakan manufacturing facility, Gadkari joked that at the current price, even he cannot “afford” the luxury car.

The union minister of road transport and highways, Gadkari, who has been actively encouraging India's transition to alternative fuels, said there was a huge market for electric vehicles in the country and that producing them locally would reduce the cost besides increasing affordability.

“You increase the production, only then it is possible to reduce cost. We are middle-class people, even I can't afford your car,” the minister said.

With express highways coming up in the country, Gadkari added, Mercedes-Benz India will get a good market for these cars.

The Mercedes EQS 580 4MATIC EV – the German car maker's latest electric – comes with a price tag of ₹1.55 crore. It joins the company's EV SUV range.

Mercedes-Benz India started its electro-mobility drive in India with the launch of its all-electric SUV EQC as a fully imported unit in October 2020, which was priced at ₹1.07 crore.

There are a total of 15.7 lakh registered electric vehicles in the country, the minister said. The Indian automobile size currently stands at ₹7.8 lakh crore and "my dream is to make it a ₹15-lakh crore industry", he noted.

Gadkari also mooted the idea of Mercedes-Benz setting up joint ventures for establishing vehicle scrapping units. “As per our records, we have 1.02 crore vehicles ready for scrapping. We have only 40 units. My estimate is that we can open four scrapping units in one district. And so easily, we can open 2,000 such units,” he said.

“My suggestion is that you can set up some such units which will give you raw materials for recycling which will reduce your component cost by 30 per cent.” The government is encouraging such facilities, “and it is important that we will get cooperation from your side”, the minister said.
